Marinos C. Dalakas, M.D.
Education: Dr. Dalakas graduated with honors in 1972 from the National University of Athens Medical School, Athens Greece. He completed his internship in 1974 at Albany Medical School in Albany, New York, and his Neurology residency in 1977 at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey-New Jersey Medical School.
Specialized training and Senior Appointments: From 1977-1980, he served as a Fellow in Neuromuscular diseases and from 1981-1986 as a Senior Investigator in Neurovirology and Neuroimmunology, all at the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, NIH, Bethesda MD. In 1987, he became the Chief of the Neuromuscular Diseases Section at the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, a position he held for more than 20 years, till 2007. Dr. Dalakas has been now appointed Professor of Neurology and Chief of the Neuromuscular Division at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia. In 1997 he was elected Professor and Chairman of the Neurology Department at the University of Athens Medical School in Greece. He is also Professor of Clinical Neurology and Pediatrics at Children's National Medical Center of the George Washington University School of Medicine.
Dr. Dalakas is board certified in Neurology, a Fellow of the American Academy of Neurology, and a Member of the American Neurological Association, the European Neurological Society, the World Muscle Society, the French Neurological Society and the Greek Neurological Association. He is an author or co-author of more than 470 scientific papers or chapters in peer-review Journals. He has edited 11 books and monographs and serves on the editorial board of several journals.
Honors and Awards: He has received several awards including the NIH Director's Award, the U.S. Public Health Service Special Recognition Award, the Duchenne-Erb-Prize by the Deutsche Gesellschaft zur Bekampfung der Musskelkrankheiten e. V, (DGBM), Germany, the Ramsay Medal by the Ramsay Society of London, the Onassis Foundation Visiting Scholarship Award, and the Gaetano Conti Prize for Clinical research. He has been awarded three times, the NIH's "Bench-to-Bedside" Award.
Research and Clinical Interests: His research is focused on exploring the immune, viral and genetic basis of various neuromuscular, demyelinating and neuronal disorders affecting muscle, nerves or brain, and applying new therapeutic interventions via target-oriented control therapeutic clinical trials.
